What is the process of shipping a car to Puerto Rico?

    i

    Pick Up

We can pick up your vehicle from anywhere in the United States and transport it to Puerto Rico. Most vehicles are shipped using open auto transport, which is the most cost-effective option. For exotic or high-value vehicles such as Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and similar models, we typically use enclosed auto carriers to provide added protection during transit.

    II

    Departure Shipping Ports

AutoStar Transport Express works with one main port in Puerto Rico and two primary ports on the U.S. mainland. We arrange vehicle transport from anywhere in the Continental United States to our designated ports, where your car is then transferred to maritime transport for ocean shipping to Puerto Rico. Shipments depart weekly from Jacksonville, Florida, and Eddystone, Pennsylvania. You may also choose door-to-port service, where your vehicle is transported directly from your location to the departure port.

    III

Arrival at the Puerto Rico Shipping Terminal

All vehicles arrive at the shipping terminal in San Juan, Puerto Rico. To collect your vehicle, you must present a valid photo ID and have sufficient cash available to cover local terminal charges. Please note that AutoStar Transport Express provides transportation from the U.S. mainland to San Juan only. Any destination fees, import charges, or applicable taxes at arrival are the customer’s responsibility.

    IV

    Getting Around Puerto Rico

If you are planning to move to Puerto Rico, having a vehicle is essential for getting around. While rental cars may be available at lower rates during hurricane season—sometimes as low as $15 per day—prices can rise sharply during peak months, reaching up to $100 per day in December. With popular destinations like El Yunque National Forest, Camuy River Cave Park, and the Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay all within driving distance of San Juan, shipping your own vehicle often becomes the most practical and cost-effective solution. Now The big question is:

    V

Documents Required to Ship a Car to Puerto Rico

To ship a vehicle to Puerto Rico, we need documents for Maritime Booking. The Port usually requires extra documents. A list of the different types of documents needed for Puerto Rico auto transport is shown below.

    • Proof of bill of lading
    • Lien Holder Authorization letter: For leased or financed vehicles, you will need a Lien Holder Authorization letter
    • License: A copy of the driver’s license or any photo ID
    • Power of attorney: When the owner is absent, a notarized power of attorney letter is required so another person can deliver and pick up the vehicle.
    • Corporate Resolution: If the CAR belongs to the company, a copy of the company’s Corporate Resolution confirming the shipment must accompany the affirmation.
    VI

    Vehicle Registration

Because it’s a U.S. territory, registering a vehicle imported there is easier than it is in other countries. U.S. driver’s licenses are valid in Puerto Rico, but any new car, truck, or motorcycle will need to be registered within three days of arrival.
You can find more information on vehicle registration at the

Tax and duty on imported vehicles & destination handling charges

You will have to pay taxes on your vehicle when you arrive in Puerto Rico. You will have to pay no less than 5% of the actual cash value of the vehicle in taxes and import duties, depending on the type and age of the vehicle.

We cannot provide specific details on the import taxes, but Hacienda does an inspection and provides the price to pay based on the vehicle’s value, and you can get an estimate on hacienda.pr.gov/arbitrios

The Department of Hacienda will give you the price of import tax before you ship your car if you give them your VIN number or year/make/model.

FAQs About Puerto Rico Car Transport

How much does it cost to ship a car to Puerto Rico?

Shipping a car to Puerto Rico generally costs $1,000-$3,000, but can range from $1,400 to $5,000+ depending on distance, vehicle size, shipping method (RORO vs. enclosed), and season. Florida: $1,100-$1,800 | East Coast: $1,900-$2,300 | Midwest: $2,000-$2,300 | West Coast: $2,500-$3,400. These are estimates and do NOT include Puerto Rico’s 11.5% excise tax or registration fees. For an exact quote, call 866-954-5830 or use our cost calculator.

How long does it take to ship a car to Puerto Rico?

Car shipping to Puerto Rico typically takes 7-14 days total: 1-3 days mainland pickup to port, 3-5 days ocean voyage from Jacksonville (or 4-6 days from Elizabeth NJ), and 2-4 days customs clearance and delivery. Florida is fastest (7-10 days), West Coast longest (12-16 days). Weather, port schedules, and peak season can affect timing. For accurate timing based on your location, call 866-954-5830.

What documents do I need to ship my car to Puerto Rico?

You need: (1) Original vehicle title in your name, (2) Valid government-issued photo ID, (3) Proof of insurance, (4) Vehicle registration, (5) Power of attorney if someone else is shipping. Vehicle must be operational (no towing), clean inside and out, and have 1/4 tank fuel or less.

Can I put personal belongings in my car when shipping to Puerto Rico?

No. USPS maritime regulations prohibit personal items in vehicles during ocean transport. Your car must be completely empty (no items in trunk, cabin, glove box). Items found during port inspection will be removed and discarded. This is a federal shipping line requirement for fire safety.

Which port does my car ship through to Puerto Rico?

Your car ships through either Jacksonville, FL (primary port for Southeast, South, Midwest origins) or Elizabeth, NJ (for Northeast, Mid-Atlantic origins). Jacksonville has daily departures and 3-5 day ocean transit. Elizabeth has weekly departures and 4-6 day transit. We determine optimal port based on your pickup location.

Do I have to pay import taxes for Puerto Rico?

Yes. Puerto Rico charges 11.5% excise tax on vehicle value even though it’s a U.S. territory. You pay this directly to Puerto Rico authorities when picking up your vehicle at the port. Additionally: $60-$200 registration fee, $52-$120 license plate fee. These are NOT included in car shipping quotes.

Can I ship an inoperable or non-running vehicle to Puerto Rico?

No. All vehicles must be operational for Puerto Rico shipping. Shipping lines require vehicles to drive on/off the vessel. Non-running vehicles cannot be accommodated due to port equipment limitations and safety regulations.

How much fuel should be in my car when shipping to Puerto Rico?

Your vehicle must have 1/4 tank of fuel or less (no more than 25% full). This is a federal maritime regulation for fire safety. Shipping lines will refuse vehicles with more than 1/4 tank. We recommend 1/8 tank to be safe.

Is my car insured during ocean transport to Puerto Rico?

Yes. All shipping lines provide cargo insurance ($100,000 coverage minimum) during ocean transport. We verify carrier insurance before assignment. Supplemental coverage available for high-value vehicles. Insurance covers vehicle during land transport to port, ocean voyage, and Puerto Rico delivery.

Can I ship my car from Puerto Rico back to the mainland U.S.?

Yes. We coordinate return shipping from Puerto Rico to any U.S. state. Same process in reverse: pickup from your Puerto Rico location, transport to San Juan port, ocean freight to Jacksonville or Elizabeth, delivery to your mainland address. Costs $1,000-$3,000 depending on destination.

What happens at Puerto Rico customs with my vehicle?

Your vehicle goes through Puerto Rico customs inspection upon arrival at San Juan port. Process takes 1-2 days. Inspection verifies: vehicle matches documentation, no prohibited items inside, vehicle is clean, title is valid. You (or your representative) must be present to pay excise tax and pick up vehicle or arrange final delivery.

Can I ship motorcycles, boats, or ATVs to Puerto Rico?

Yes. We coordinate shipping for motorcycles, boats, ATVs, jet skis, and other vehicles to Puerto Rico. Pricing varies by vehicle type and size. Motorcycles: $700-$1,200. Boats: Custom quote based on length. Same ports (Jacksonville/Elizabeth), same documentation requirements.

Is AutoStar a shipping line or broker for Puerto Rico?

AutoStar Transport Express is a licensed auto transport broker (MC-600908).
